Impressions of a new tablet pc user...

I noticed the machine seemed to get quite hot; especially in tablet mode. I don't know if it was just because I was holding it in a different way, but the fan was going crazy at some stages, especially when I first got the machine Warrick 1/2/2006

I liked the way the pen and the text combined in EverNote and OneNote, two programs that really appealed to me. Beig able to TYPE, and then later, or at the same time, circle, highlight and annotate seemed to me more powerful than either doing one entry mode. Warrick 1/2/2006

I've been listening to a couple of tablet pc podcasts, On the Run with the Tablet PC, and the TabletPC podcast from the Podcast Network. They've given me some good insights into how people use these tools; esp. for productivity. I was quite amused though at one guy saying that he was happy to bring his tablet to an 'exec' meeting and write on it with a stylus on his own lap, but wasn't comfortable bringing a notebook, plonking it on the desk and typing on it. Something about the one hand being free that opens you up to others, he argued. Warrick 15/2/2006

 

 

I've been using the Tablet (and a Data Projector) in every class. I don't take a whiteboard marker at all: I decided to go "cold turkey" from the start of the year!The result has been to extend both the coherence of my teaching (in that I can follow up examples or "dangling discussions" in the next class by taking up from exactly where we left off) and its effectiveness - or "reach". I use the text recognition feature to upload lesson notes as Word documents on our Intranet, so students who miss classes (or the point!) can check what transpired at their own convenience. The emails - questions and comments- which have surfaced as a result seem to show that this has been most useful. David 17/2/06

 

 

Students seem to get it. At the end of class today, some of them were clamoring to have a go at drawing on the computer. Stef drew this bee. They sall said that, after the first odd sensation of writing on the screen, it seemed normal. They all wanted one! Warrick 1/3/2006

Computing grunt: I wonder if tablet pcs need more grunt than a normal mode? The Fujitsu Lifebook 4000 series we're running has a great hard drive (160GB), Intel centrino technology, 512 MB of RAM and seems a little underpowered (read, slow) at times, esp. starting up, and sometimes loading apps. Stefan writes of the Virginia University article: Interesting article... I was thinking about my use recently and the thought that I may have a "hidden bias" (against tablet functionality) came into my mind - despite what I know and say. Being someone that has embraced the use of my laptop in as many areas as possible for nearly 8.5 years, I have obviously evolved the way I do things away from a style that required pen/paper, so that it could be done with my PC. Now that tablet functionality is here (I know/acknowledge all it's advantages), however, I'm finding it difficult to return to a 'free hand' style of doing things, because it's been so long since I did it that way - in essence, I need to de-evolve to evolve. I believe that the Tablet PC will quickly replace standard notebook computers in schools. The ability for students to type or write documents is an important aspect of education. This is especially relevant in Mathematics. No student could be expected to type out their math notes. But to hand write, yes! I particularly like the idea of creating a onenote work sheet for my students, sending it to them, then they write their solutions directly into the computer. In addition, I can also create an example sheet, share it with my students and then while one student writes their answer to a question, every student sees that student's writing appearing on their PC. - Steve hubbard - Toorak College 17/5/2006
